Secret Project!
I’ve been MIA for 2 weeks, but I just finished work on a fun project. I don’t think I’m allowed to talk all willy-nilly about it yet, but it was a learning experience. I had to design 2 mexican loteria cards, then animate a little 9 second stop-motion intro with them. It SOUNDED really simple, but I figuring out how to animate a card flip almost broke my brain. Katie helped me figure out the motion, my mom designed the wood and rubber stopper system to make it work.
Here are a few iterations of the 2 cards I designed:
Here’s the set up:
The whole thing took 2 days. 1 day to set up and figure out, 1 day to animate and edit. 5 seconds of actual animation. I was excited because it was the first time I was going to get to try wire-removal. Spoiler alert, it worked.
Here is an example of what it looked like through the camera:
The director ended up wanting a much more simple set up, so the final animation is nothing but the cards on the table. Last and least, here are my timing charts from my card tests:
Anyway- I’ll post the animation when I’m allowed to divulge all the information.
Home Again
Got home about 5 days ago. I just finished wrestling a brutal flu, Feeling about 90% today, and my mom just helped me get everything in order so that my room is a streamlined animating tank:
I need to keep animating so I don’t forget everything I’ve learned, but those animation peg-hole punchers cost like $500 bucks. So mom helped me construct some peg-bars that will register standard 3-hole punched paper. Now all I gotta do is make stuff!
2-ish Days until complettion
This is what I see when I sleep:
I’ve been coloring for a while now. I think I have 1 scene left to add color to, and 3 to finish adding color to. After that I’m just going to be massaging Badbloom until it’s as good as it can be. This semester has been insane. No class next week, then it’s due. After that, my brother Phil is coming to visit, and I’m going to do 4.5 months of relaxing in 12 days.
My body is starting to reject the computer chair. It’s fighting back in weird ways- I feel like I pulled a shoulder muscle. I’m going to need to figure out a better system for animating next year.
Just one more week long push- gotta finish the semester up with a bang.
I’m looking forward to drawing agin.
Incredible Week
This has been a pretty amazing week all around. I will put all of the wonderful events in list form to help quantify them. Surely it’s too much good for one person to receive:
- I found out that I am the recipient of a very generous scholarship
- 2 days before sound-lock I found music for my Production 1, and it came in the form of bad ass Florida surf rock Waylon Thornton. I couldn’t be happier because not only is the song perfect, but I’ve seen these guys live in Gainesville. So I feel like I’m repping home pretty hard.
- Two best friends came and visited from out of town
- I’ve been getting excellent parking spots all week
- My cousin got me a tax-return!
- Production is on schedule
I’m savoring this surge of positivity. I know that I’m going to be running into trouble with my animation when I have to color it (starting Sunday.) But hopefully it will just be mind-numbing and not time-destroying. Still haven’t figured out a title, kind of want to run it by my brother. Loop Road? BlackSwamp, FL? I dunno. But I’ll have that by tomorrow.
Here’s a link to the band that saved my project. Serious authentic surf, punk and soul mix. The track I’m using is Bat Glasses:
