Storyboards- 11 weeks until picture lock
Finished my storyboards for Production 1:
Planning this has been great. I haven’t had this much fun planning a project since in loooooong time. But I still can’t figure out a name. Cordyceps? Fungus? Anthropopathogen? The Coronation? Titles are definitely one of my greatest weaknesses. I want the kind of title that changes your interpretation of what you’ve seen. But right now I’ve got nothing.
The more I learn about this fungus, the better it gets. Katie and I went to a free talk that the International Documentary Association had at the cinefamily a few months ago. One of the things that the film-makers recommended was that we write down our initial reactions to things. If something catches our attention, immediately write down way, because it’s easy to lose sight of that after you’ve been scrutinizing it for months. With that in mind I returned to some of the old videos that originally got me excited for this concept and SHIIIIT CORDYCEPS FUNGUS IS THE COOLEST:
This video is the better one. The next video just has some really nice (pretty gross) time lapse fungus growth:

In other news: I finally got a frame for the Jay Ryan print that came in the mail. It’s now raining hell-fire on me as I work: NEXT WEEK: STYLE BOARDS • ANIMATIC • SOUND SCRIPT
Multiplane Process and David Lindley!
I’m a day behind on production but it’s been for some worthy causes. Saturday night I was able to go to a Brad Neely event at the cinefamily, and LAST night I was able to see David Lindley- which is something I’ve been waiting to do for years and years and years. So thank you dad for emailing me his tour dates.
So my nights have been eaten, but my days were spent DEVELOPING:
- THE MULTIPLANE
I need this for my final project. It took 2 days to produce, which is why I’m a day late with my animatic. But the good thing about cut-out animation is that most of the work is on the front end. I’m still dealing with a lot of unknowns, but unknowns tend to produce happy accidents…sometimes. Here’s some process stuff making the multiplane:
For something so simple, it was hard for me to wrap my head around.
- Katie, leaving me in the dust
I’m not allowed in Katie’s woodshop, so she had to take all of the plans and build the thing herself. Which is an amazing favor for 2 reasons: One, I was able to stay home and work on my animatic. Two, Katie is a much better craftsman than me and the thing looks amazing:
Tonight I finish the animatic. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I start producing all of the cut-outs and other animated assets. Friday and Saturday, I animate. Then a cumulative history final. Then I’m home free.
Thanksgiving at Lake Tahoe
So Katie and I just got back from an awesome weekend, visiting Lake Tahoe for Friendsgiving.

But the fun is over- the last week of my first semester starts tomorrow. 1 research paper due Friday, 1 animation assignment due Thursday. Then a week of no classes and on Tuesday the 13th my BIG assignment is due. Hopefully I’ll have some process shots of this thing as it’s being made. I’d like it to be very good.
As of today I have to start working and not stop for the next 2.5 weeks. I’ve got to kick it into high gear. High Gear starting- riiiiiiiiiight affffteerr thiiiiiiiiiiisss ssennnteeennnnce!
Dog dangling kind of day
I feel good- I feel energized. A lot of my peers are WAY better than me. It’s like having daily reminders of how hard I need to work. Animating is much more fun than I anticipated. Truthfully, I was worried I might hate the tedium of it, I was worried it would affect my drawing, but it’s just a different way of thinking. Above is another drawing I did for that video game- a lip-synch assignment is on it’s way.
